Tillbaka i stallet

Embla and Pepper get along well!

Back in the stable

Today was the first time I got back in the stable since giving birth. The hole family joined me. Pepper really wanted me to do something with him and took the halter in his mouth a couple of times. But, this was a short visit and then back home. But, things are so much easier now!

Eksem

Sweet itch

Sweet itch in horses is something that I dread. I don't know how common it might be with the Rocky, even if I have heard about a couple of cases that might be what I fear. But, I have understood that it always is a risk when importing a horse and it is into a totally different amount and type of insects than used to. Therefore Pepper and Percy wore rugs most of the summer, but this year I have let them stay more without it. But I have to be careful for years.

I cover my horses as soon as they show the least signs to scratch more than I think would be normal. Of course all horses can get a little bit itchy by mosquito bite, but when mane or tail starts to show signs of rubbing or I seem them scratch multiples days and the neem oil that I usually use helps. Better safe than sorry. Cause if someone would get problems they would suffer and there would be a lot of work. It is much easier to try to prevent.

And no the one having most problems is Calinka - she always scratch her tail each spring/beginning of summer and get always a lot of bites of those bigger insects and therefore is the one being most in fly sheets. Bunny has been reacting to something - but it is with small lumps all over her body - not the sweet itch
version. Still, that makes me let her wear rugs days when insects are active.

And fly hoods - well we have so many flies and they tend to get in the eyes all the time if they don't get any protections, sometimes making the eyes a little red or full of tears.

Reintroduction of Pepper and Percy

At Tuesday afternoon I noticed that Percy had gone into heat. Therefore Maria and I planned to introduce her and Embla to Pepper, Bunny and Tea during Wednesday. But, plans got different as I had to go to the maternity ward instead. But, Maria manged to get Pepper, Percy and Embla together and everything went fine. Maria got a couple of pictures. With some luck ewe soon have to pregnant mares!

This years final baby

June 26 came the last baby of the year - the two legged one. A boy. Everything went fine and we are back home from the hospital. Luckily I get some help with the horses right now. But I hope that I soon be back in the stable and the saddle.

Shopping

Today Hööks started their sale so Isac and I passed by. I got a very pink saddle pad - it is going to look so good at Bunny and Pepper. Before we left home I realized that I didn't have any shoes for riding. I had totally missed that as I haven't been on horse back since the cold disappeared... And Isac got to choose a halter for Tea (a way to get him to join me to the shop) that she can use when she gets older. He prefered the baby pink one that sparkled.

...and then we got some other, more boring stuff; show shine, an extra tub for water as they drink a lot in the warm weather and some grain. Well, it is good to have those things at home, I guess. I also got two fly sheets from Horseware, one more fly sheet for exercise and a outdoor  thin rug. All of that from the internet as I really love the brand.

Emblas gaits

At the age of six days, Embla gaits most of the time - if she isn't cantering. And she seems to have gotten her parents nice canter!

Emblas mamma försvinner

Stackars Embla.

Emblas mum disappears

Poor Embla. Percy got caught, fly sprayed and got a fly sheet as bigger insects has arrived and she was frustrated about them. Everything with Embla close by. But - suddenly Emblas mum was gone - a blueish horse that didn't look like mum at all was all that was left... Embla got very upset and run around whining a lot. Finally she found mum and the milk.

Both me and Maria found the fact that it seemd as Embla most trusted her vision and maybe some smell and didn't recognize Percy. Tea didn't react at all when BUnny got her fly sheet on, but she was older.

Earlier today, Maria took Calinka fro a trail ride and yesterday Sandra did some canter work with her.

Embla - betydelse

Embla – the meaning of the name

Accoding to Nordic mythology Ask and Embla were the first human beings. Therefore I thought it would suit as Embla is the first Rocky Mountain Horse both born and breed in Sweden.  Ask means ash tree and Embla might mean “small elm tree”. Both Ask and Embla were, according to the stories created from trees found close to the ocean by the gods Oden, Ville and Ve. Ask and Embla got to live in Midgård, that was supposed to be the middleworld.

This years’ foals have gotten names implying how special they are. I wanted to give them names that showed the fact that they was first. In the future the names probably becomes totally different and created with other thoughts’ in mind. Maybe names that fits the personality more or some special event around their birth. The mist the morning Embla was born could very well have been an inspiration…

Embla also works well with Ullekalv as a name: There is some Ullevi in Sweden and Ullevi means “the place to sacrifice to Ullr”. (Ullr is a god in Nordic mythology – hence the connection). Kalv i Ullekalv means literally calf and means in this context a calf to Ullevi. And of course there is a Ullevi close to Ullekalv.

A bonus is that at the Ullekalv that I refers to there is a lot of elm trees.

Embla dag 4/day 4

The others are curious about the new baby...

Embla dag 3/day 3

Midsommarafton

Midsummer

Midsummer and I had a chance to just spend some time in the stable. The horses got to stay inside while I brushed all of them, massage Calinka and did some lead training with Tea. She already seems to start to understand what I want even if it is only the third time and we just had walk a few steps in the stall each time each time. Good girl!
The biting game...

Percy is a bit protective about Embla - maybe most against the other horses and especially Pepper. Tea on the other hand has started to play a bit with Pepper. Embla is curious about those other horses - but mom don't want her to check them out...

...but when he bites back it wasn't as fun so Tea came visit me instead...
Feet are so interesting...

Apperently even when you get older (Pepper)
At some point Bunny thought Pepper did something wrong and she had to tell him to behave...
And they had to play the teeth game a little more...

Pepper got a braid as he was warm under his mane - see if that helps.

A warm day an a lot of insects - and some need more protection than others
All horses got indoors to eat a little today.
Mika came to check out the new arrival

Embla Video dag 1/day 1

Första kvällen/First evening

It is still not easy to get up...
The hoofs already look less strange.
Percy wanted to do a lot of strange faces...

Pepper och Percys dotter - bildbomb

Percy in the stall she escaped.

When I found them about four thirty.

Trying to figure out where to find food...

Pepper and Percy's daughter

Yesterday evening I measured Percy's milk quality with the refractometer and it was in the good level for colostrum. If so I have read that the mare should foal within about 24 hours. Therefore I decided to sleep in the stable so I didn't have to rush from home. And I would probably not miss the foaling...

I didn't sleep very well - it was hard to find a good position in the car. And Percy didn't like to be locked up alone in the stall with the small pasture outside - she mostly stood and pawed her feet. At half past two in the morning I woke up and shortly afterwards she managed to get out from the small pasture. As she didn't look as if she was going to foal right then and that she might got more stressed from being alone I let her stay in the bigger pasture. Something told me that she wasn't totally relaxed, but I went to sleep again. I woke up again a little past four and couldn't see the horses. But it was beautiful misty morning. I got out of the car - and of course - in the other end of the pasture was a foal standing up.

Found it (after a lot of searching)
I got there by car and checked them. I just don't understand why the alarm didn't set of - but Percy is Percy and she probably tricked it or something happened when I tried to change it settings some time ago.

The little filly was surprisingly steady on her feet, wasn't totally dry and still haven't found food. She is much more refined than Tea was at the same age. Percy still had the afterbirth hanging and I tried to tie it up without much success.

Percys when Embla found the food.
Percy is a very good mum and has taken good care of her daughter - licked her and watch her - even if there was no problem to handle the foal. The baby is social and curious. The plan is to name her Ullekalvs Embla.

Embla is the first Rocky Mountain horse both breed and born in Sweden!

Learning to know Calinka

The feet of newborn foals are so fun...
A reset a couple of hours after birth.
When Emlba had dried up a bit she got leg barring. I know I have read something about it and horses that is not dun (she isn't), but I don't really remember. I think it might goo away.
Beautiful morning...
Even Calinka needed a reset after the birth.
