För ett tag sedan råkade jag se att SLU sökte hästar att testa för DMRT3 genen - den som visar sig skilja på om en häst kan tölt eller passgång hos Islandshäst och som får travare att vara mer framgångsrika. Efter kontakt med dem kvalade alla mina vuxna hästar in till studien. Det innebar att jag svarade på några frågor om varje häst och skickade in tagel för analys av DMRT3 genen.
Idag kom svaret tillbaka. Jag tänkte att det hela säkert skulle ta ett år eller så, men de var redan klara med studien och det var först då jag fick reda på resultaten. Alla Rockies som testats hittils verkar ha haft två kopior av genen som ger passgång hos islandshäst även om det bara verkar röra sig om kanppa 30 hästar. Därmed blev jag blev inte förvånad när Pepper, Percy och Bunny alla hade två kopior. Calinka däremot har aldrig varit bra på travbanan så jag misstänkte att hon bara hade en upplaga av genen - eller kanske ingen alls. Men, faktiskt hade även hon två upplagor av gångartsgenen! Nu gör det ju inte att hon töltar, men det var ändå kul att få veta.
Vad innebär det här rent praktiskt då? För Calinkas del innebär det inte mycket, kanske borde hon kunna tölta, men det har hon ännu inte visat. För mina Rockisar däremot innebär det att jag vet att alla avkommor efter min nuvarande hingst och ston kommer att få två omgångar av gångartgenen. Det i sin tur borde ge bra förutsättningar för tölt. Det skulle även kunna innebära att om Pepper korsas med ston som inte har en extra gångart så kommer avkomman att kunna tölta. Jag skulle tro att sannolikheten för det är hög, men det kan mycket väl finnas flera gener som inverka. Däremot kan jag garantera en omgång av gångartgenen oavsett vilket sto Pepper korsas med.

DMRT3 - the gait gene
Some time ago I noticed that SLU (Swedish University of Agricultural Science) looked for horses that would participate in studies regarding the DMRT3 gene. The gene that turned out to predict if Icelandic horses would pace or not and if trotters would be more successful. I got in contact with them and all my grown up horses participated. I only had to fill in some questions and pull som hair for DNA samples.
Today I got the results. I thought that it would take a year or more before they had finished the study and I would receive any feed back. I thought that all my Rockies would have two copies of the "gait gene" as all Rockies that had been tested so far seems to have had that even if the papers only have listed less than 30 tested Rockys. Calinka on the other had has never been a good race horse so I thought that she might only have one copy of the gen - or none. Surprisingly enought she had two as well. Still, she is not gaiting, but it is fun to know.
What does those results imply? Calinkas results is most for fun. Maybe she could be taught to gait, but she hasn't shown that yet. Breeding with my Rockies is another thing. Now I know that all my foals that are a combination of my present stallion and mares are going to have two copies of the gait gene. That is probably making them good gaiter. It is also possible that all foals that Pepper would sire with non gaited mares could be gaited. Still, I wouldn't promise anything like that, there might be other genes that influence the ability to gait as well. Still, I can guarantee one copy of the gait gene.
