So similar and so different
Last week I got the idea to try some "obstacles". Just outside the stable it was nicely lit up and the arena was still covered with ice.
First up was Bunny; she finds it hard to leave the others so I thought this could be a way to train her on that, easy aids and cooperation even if she is getting very round. She loved it; we walked and trotted over cavaletti. We walked on the tarp, went up to the hay and crossed the small ditch and got back over it. Did "slalom" around the poles and backed between them. Bareback and bitless in the darkness/lamplight. Tea got to try a little as she helped me to put everything back.
Next day it were Pepper and Percy's time. Bunny stood in her stall and seemed to say: "PICK ME; PICK ME". Pepper had to much energy. (That horse only seems to be able to get rid of energy while being worked, he is to lazy to do int in the pasture...) Still, I got on his back bareback and he did it all even if the backing part wasn't his favorite and he got a little bored. So, it was very quick as I didn't want to bore him and either get him to hate the exercise or try to get some more action. Better to be able to praise him for good work and finish in a good mood.
Percy did what was expected of her but didn't like the ditch at all and got "mareish". One of few times we didn't get along well. In the end we both thought that we got it our way. But she wasn't very enthusiastic about the exercise so we kept it short as well. This time Mira got the honor to help be to get everything back. (Calinka got a dressage work the first day and didn't get to try this. If I know her correctly she would have had no problems with the cavaletti, but to "slalom" between the poles would have been harder as she is so fast and I'm not sure if she had walked on the tarp or passed the ditch).
What strike me most is how different they are: Pepper want speed. It don't have to be super fast, but he likes to move. Percy also get frustrated if it is to slow and to technical even if it is ok to some extent. She is also slightly more skeptic to the obstacles than the other Rockies. Bunny instead loves this. She finds is easy and challenging but mostly rather simple. Calinka also likes speed and is more skeptic to this kind of obstacles. Tea and Mira both did find while I lead them, only probelm was to get them to trott/gait over the poles. Still, I am going to do it again and with more things of the same kind. Soon Tea is going to try this while I long rein her...
